Providing The Best Food For Beagles

Feb 25th, 2009 by tommy

Giving your Beagle the proper mix of nutrients will help her live longer and feel her best for many years.  But, what composes the best Beagle diets of today?

Let’s start with carbohydrates.  Carbohydrates provide an energy source for all animals.  This energy drives chemical reactions within the dog’s body.  Moving muscles in all parts of the body requires the supply of power from carbohydrates.

As food for Beagles, carbohydrates often come in the form of corn, wheat, and rice.  While these forms provide bulk fiber that aids in digestion, they also supply complex carbohydrates to the Beagle’s diet.  Every commercially available dog food will contain a mixture of grains for this purpose.

Proteins are also vital in a Beagle’s diet.  The dog’s body processes will break down proteins into their amino acid components and rebuild them into specific proteins needed to form tissue such as muscle.

Real meat is often the best source of protein for a dog.  Chunks of real chicken or beef are best for your Beagle’s diet even when provided in the form of a dried kibble.

Fats are also important in Beagle diets.  As with proteins, the source of fat is key.  Animal sources such as chicken fat and fish oil supply energy.  Plant sources like safflower and flax provide for good skin health.

Food for Beagles also should include fiber.  Earlier I mentioned the carbohydrate sources that provide fiber.  However, even more is optimal for good digestive health.  Many commercially available dog foods contain beet pulp.

Beagle diets should be closely monitored when talking about the amount of food consumed.  Beagles tend to eat too much if given the opportunity.  An average 25 pound Beagle should be allowed 2-4 cups of most dried dog foods per day.

Of course, there are always exceptions.  The amount of food for beagles should be at the lower end for smaller adults and increased for larger ones.  Young, active adult Beagles may also need higher amounts of food because of their higher activity levels.

These figures are a guideline only.  The best feeding advice will come from your veterinarian.

Today’s better dog foods are formulated well and will often contain all the ingredients listed here.  Feeding the best food for your beagle usually is a matter of simply opening a bag!
